AI calculator or a phone app? An honest comparison
You can already photograph a maths problem with a free app. So why would anyone buy a calculator that does the same thing?
It is the right question, and the honest answer is not "because ours is better at maths". Photomath, Symbolab, Gauthmath and Mathway are good software. They are free to start, they are already on the phone in your pocket, and for a lot of people they are genuinely the right answer. If that is you, use them — we would rather you did that than buy a device you did not need.
What follows is the case for the other side, and where it stops being true.
The problem was never the maths. It is the phone.
A maths app is only useful where you are allowed to have the phone it runs on. Across Europe, that is now a shrinking list of places.
- France banned phones in primary and middle schools in 2018, and from the 2026–27 school year the ban extends to lycées — students aged 15 to 18 hand their phones in at the gate.
- The Netherlands has had a national ban on phones, tablets and smartwatches in secondary schools since 1 January 2024, extended to primary schools after that summer.
- Italy banned phones during lessons in 2007, widened it in 2024 to cover breaks for ages 3 to 14, and extended it to upper secondary schools in 2025.
- Spain has banned smartphones in primary schools, with the detail set regionally.
- Germany, Belgium and Austria regulate at state or school level, and the direction of travel is the same everywhere.
So in most of the countries we sell to, a phone-based maths app is unusable in exactly the place the maths is happening. A calculator is not. Nobody confiscates a calculator at the school gate.
And at home, the phone is still the phone
Ask any parent which object makes homework take three hours instead of one. Opening a maths app means opening the device that also contains every message, every notification and every feed engineered by people far better resourced than the homework. The intention is to check one problem. Twenty minutes later the problem is still unchecked.
This is the part we designed around rather than the arithmetic. GeniCalc has no social media, no messaging, no browser and no notifications. It cannot show you anything except maths. A student who picks it up to check a problem puts it down having checked a problem.
It is also the honest answer to a question parents ask us directly: how do I give my child help with maths without giving them the internet? A phone with a maths app on it is still a phone. This is not.
Typing maths is not the same as typing
Entering a nested fraction, an integral or a matrix on a touchscreen is a chore, and it is where app sessions quietly die. Physical keys with dedicated function buttons are faster for the same expression, and they work with cold hands, in a lecture theatre, without unlocking anything, and without a hand covering half the screen while you type.
The 550+ scientific functions also work with no connection at all — no SIM, no wifi, nothing. The camera and the AI need a connection. The calculator never does.
The money, honestly
An app looks free and is not, quite: the useful tiers are subscriptions, in the same way ours is. The comparison that actually matters is what you are left holding. A device is a one-off purchase that keeps working as a full scientific calculator forever, subscription or no subscription. An app subscription buys you access for as long as you keep paying, on a phone you will replace in three years.
We are not going to pretend a paid device is less than free. If cost is the deciding factor, the app wins and you should take it.
When you should just use the app
Genuinely — and we would rather say this than sell you the wrong thing:
- You are an adult with the discipline to open a maths app and not open anything else.
- You need graphing, or a large screen to inspect a plotted function.
- You need it once a month, not most days.
- You are somewhere phones are freely allowed, and cost matters more than focus.
The device earns its place when maths is a daily thing, when it happens somewhere a phone is not welcome, or when the person doing the maths is at an age where handing them a phone to help with homework solves one problem and creates three.
What we built instead
A scientific calculator with 550+ functions, a camera that photographs a problem and shows the working rather than just the answer, and its own SIM slot so it never has to borrow a phone's connection. AI that can be switched off entirely in the settings, leaving a plain scientific calculator, for classrooms and situations that require it.
One thing we will not claim: it is not exam equipment. A device with a camera and a connection is prohibited in invigilated examinations, and switching the AI off does not change that — an invigilator cannot verify a software setting.
