How an AI calculator with a camera works—and how to check it
A camera-equipped AI calculator lets you submit a photographed question and read an explanation on the device. GC-1 combines that connected feature with offline scientific calculation. Understanding the two modes helps you decide when an AI explanation is useful and when to check a calculation directly.
From photograph to explanation
- Capture the complete question. Keep the page flat, use good light and include any diagram, units and instruction that changes what you are being asked to find.
- Send the content through the connection. GC-1’s camera solving needs a compatible nano SIM and mobile data plan, supplied by you, plus active AI access.
- The AI interprets the question. A vision-capable model can interpret mathematical notation and propose an explanation. It may misread a sign, exponent or diagram.
- Check the interpretation and method. Compare the question shown or discussed in the response with the original. Then test each calculation and the final answer.
We do not promise that every question is recognised correctly or solved instantly. Image quality, the question, network speed and provider availability affect the experience. GeniCalc may route questions to Claude, OpenAI or Gemini; final service settings and age requirements are being prepared before activation.
A worked example you can verify
The following is an illustrative algebra example, not a photograph or recording of a GC-1 response. Solve 2x² + 8x = 42:
- Move 42 to the left: 2x² + 8x − 42 = 0.
- Divide by 2: x² + 4x − 21 = 0.
- Factorise: (x + 7)(x − 3) = 0.
- Set each factor to zero: x = −7 or x = 3.
Now substitute each result into the original equation. For x = 3, 2 × 9 + 8 × 3 = 42. For x = −7, 2 × 49 − 56 = 42. This substitution catches errors that an explanation can otherwise hide.
Make camera help useful for revision
Try the question yourself first. When you get stuck, use an explanation to identify the step you missed rather than copying the whole answer. Close the explanation, solve the question again and then try a similar problem. If the reasoning does not make sense, ask a teacher or check an independent method.
For word problems, check units and assumptions. For diagrams, check labels and scale. For a decimal result, ask whether an exact fraction or surd is required. A plausible-looking answer can still be the wrong answer to the question.
What works without AI?
GC-1’s 550+ scientific functions work offline. Camera solving and AI answers require a connection and AI access. AI Plus is optional. The included-month promotion and continuation terms are set out below; no paid plan starts automatically after the included months.
Protect the information in the photograph
Crop out names, faces and other personal information. Do not photograph an entire page when a single question is enough. A provider may retain requests under its API and safety rules; immediate deletion is not promised. Read the privacy policy, and the final age and parent approval requirements before enabling connected features for a young user.
GC-1 is for homework and revision. Turning AI off does not itself establish exam permission. See the GCSE and A-Level calculator guide and GC-1 details.
GeniCalc availability: pre-orders reopen 15 November 2026; estimated dispatch January 2027. Joining the waitlist is free. A production sample has been tested, but development and conformity assessment are still in progress. Current images are design visualisations.
Pre-order promotion and standard pricing
The pre-order device price is €189 in the EU or £165 in the UK for orders placed from 15 November through 31 December 2026. From 1 January 2027, the device price is €239 or £209. VAT is included. Delivery is free throughout the EU, including Germany, and across the UK. UK prices also include import VAT and customs charges; no additional customs payment is due from the customer.
AI Plus costs and promotional access
3 months of AI Plus are included only with pre-orders placed from 15 November 2026 through 31 December 2026, starting at first activation. Standard purchases from 1 January 2027 exclude AI Plus unless an advertised promotion includes it.
No paid subscription starts automatically when the included months end. Choose a paid AI Plus plan to continue camera solving and AI access. Without a paid plan, the offline scientific functions continue to work.
AI Plus costs €24/month or €216/year in the EU, or £21/month or £189/year in the UK, including VAT. A chosen paid plan renews each billing period until cancelled through your website account. Cancellation stops renewal; access continues until the end of the paid period. Camera solving and AI also require a compatible nano SIM and mobile data plan, supplied by you.
GeniCalc is designed for homework, revision and practice at home. It is not sold as an exam-approved calculator. Turning AI off does not establish exam permission. For timed practice, use only the tools allowed by your exam provider. Check the relevant official rules and your examination centre before choosing exam equipment.
